STUDIO RESIDENCY WINTER 2024

Parent Company is pleased to announce the artists selected as the recipients of this year's Studio Residency Program. This new program attracted an incredibly impressive pool of applicants. After careful consideration, the selection committee made up of Re’al Christain, Mira Dayal, and Ada Potter, has chosen two outstanding artists to be granted this unique opportunity. More details on the application process can be found here.

The Studio Residency Program is designed to provide emerging artists working in installation or performance with a dedicated space to explore and develop their artistic practice. Over the course of the six-week residency, these artists will work out of the gallery space, hosting public programming and events, and create a culminating installation.

Throughout the residency, Parent Company will work closely with the selected artists to facilitate opportunities for public engagement, collaboration, and artistic growth. The community is invited to follow the progress of the residents through regular updates on our website and social media.

We are proud to introduce the 2023 Studio Residency Program recipients Max Popov and Yani aviles.

Max Popov is an artist living in New York City. He holds a BFA from The Cooper Union. In 2023, Popov presented his first solo exhibition at Chatham Soccer, New York. His work has been included in numerous group shows and gatherings at The Intima, New York; Shower, Seoul; Swiss Institute, New York; Snooperverse / Moveable type, HISK exhibition space, Brussels; and Emily Harvey Foundation, New York.

Popov’s proposal for the space includes working site-specifically and researching the urban history of the location. In his initial research, he has found some points of interest that will influence the direction of the work including the rezoning of Downtown Brooklyn, the decommissioned radio tower above Brooklyn Technical High School, the façade of 81 Willoughby Street, and the now demolished murals of Stephen Powers.

Public reception on Saturday, February 10, from 6-8pm

Yani aviles is a transdisciplinary artist whose practice is a form of medicine making. They research, write, and create contemplative installations and conceptual works that challenge normative systems of knowledge production and dissemination through multimedia and embodied decolonial approaches. Yani’s work has been exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Berlin, at venues including Adds Donna, Apparatus Projects, and The Institut für Alles Mögliche, among others. They received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University, and foundational Reiki, and Herbalism certifications.

During their time as a resident, aviles will turn the gallery space into an open-access studio, library, and place for people to gather and dialogue about issues plaguing the city. In the wake of the Mayor's budget cuts and the announcement that libraries will now be closed on Sundays, aviles will create a curated library open on Sundays. The collection will include literature, zines, books, videos, and other materials that are related to issues including housing instability, development, displacement, and funding cuts to education, arts, and ecology programs.
