On the first day of my residency, I went for a walk. I left the gallery, heading west on Willoughby to the former NY/NJ Telephone Company headquarters. By the final year of the nineteenth century, this building was a major confluence of telephone landlines, extending connections by wire, 21,000 miles in total, as far as Sag Harbor. Embellished with beaux-arts reliefs of archaic stone telephones bridged by coiling wire, mascarons of the god Mercury and a copper cornice, it stood as a symbol of acceleration, communication at the speed of thought. Reaching the city landmark, I found a permit through the glass, approving construction to install new antennas on the roof.
Max Popov is an artist living in New York City. He holds a BFA from The Cooper Union. In 2023, Popov presented his first solo exhibition at Chatham Soccer, New York. His work has been included in numerous group shows and gatherings at The Intima, New York; Shower, Seoul; Swiss Institute, New York; Snooperverse / Moveable type, HISK exhibition space, Brussels; and Emily Harvey Foundation, New York.
The Studio Residency Program is designed to provide emerging artists working in installation or performance with a dedicated space to explore and develop their artistic practice. Over six weeks, the resident artists work out of the gallery space and create a culminating installation. More details on the application process can be found here.
